When Progress Stops

When you first start playing the guitar, progress comes easy.

Every session you learn something new and gain a bit more confidence and comfort with the instrument.

Of course, your fingers hurt, the guitar still doesn’t feel quite right in your hands, and nailing that F chord is tricky…

But your chord changes are getting smoother, you’re building confidence with riffs and licks and you can even play a few simple songs.

It feels like a huge accomplishment (which it is!)

But, in a way it’s also just the beginning of your journey as a guitar player, so you continue on.

You learn more chords, you learn different notes and scales, and maybe you even try improvising or creating your own music.

Over time, with patience and consistency, you get better and better.

After a few years, you have dozens of songs in your repertoire, you can nail your favorite licks from beginning to end, and you can even play along with a group as long as it’s a song you know.

But then, progress starts to slow down…

You’re still putting in the time to practice, but you just don’t seem to be getting better. And what worked so well to help build your skills in the beginning just doesn’t seem to be yielding results.

So you start to lose confidence with what to even practice. Should you learn more songs? Spend more time with theory? Learn more chords and scales?

You seek out as much information as you can –  buying books, searching YouTube for lessons and downloading a list of songs to learn.

But instead of getting better, you just end up aimlessly jumping from one topic to another without any focus or intention.

Then before you know it, months have passed and you haven’t made any progress – you’re still practicing the same exercises and snippets of songs without developing a deeper level of understanding and fluidity.

It’s easy to get stuck here for years or even decades…

Potentially spending hours every week still playing and practicing, but not making any significant progress. And feeling totally lost and unsure of what you even need to practice to actually get better.

There are so many different areas that you could be working on, that it can be difficult to know where to even begin.

The reality though, is that if you want to keep making progress beyond the beginner level, you need a strategic practice roadmap.

Playing licks, noodling over backing tracks and learning small sections of songs isn’t enough to keep progress going.

You need to know exactly what to work on, every time you sit down with your guitar. No more random noodling or playing the same songs on repeat – just focused practice that will actually make you a better guitarist.

If you do this – even if you only have a few hours to practice each week – you’ll be able to make amazing and consistent progress for years on end.

Here’s how…

Introducing:
Next Level Playing

A strategic roadmap for intermediate guitarists to become well-rounded, fluent musicians:

  • Gain confidence and a sense of freedom when improvising
  • Learn what triads are and how you can use them to create beautiful chord progressions
  • Move beyond just the minor pentatonic scale to create more varied and interesting solos
  • Stop feeling “trapped” on the fretboard and move around freely
  • Understand the modes, and how you can use them to create totally different feels in your playing
  • Learn to embellish chord progressions in the style of guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer and John Frusciante

No more aimless noodling or learning random pieces of disconnected theory.

With Next Level Playing (and some consistent practice!) within a matter of weeks you’ll be able to identify notes all over the fretboard, play triads and nail essential soloing techniques.

And by the end of the course, you’ll be soloing using the modes, improvising across the entire fretboard and embellishing chord progressions in the style of Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer and John Frusciante.

There’s no dry theory or exercises here – every concept is taught through beautiful pieces that you’ll love playing and using in your own improvisations.

What Students Are Saying

After teaching myself for years by the hit-and-miss ‘Youtube method’ this course is step-by-step filling in all the holes in my understanding of the guitar. In a way that makes me want to dig in every day, Paul’s course beautifully balances musical understanding, skill-building and a real pleasure in learning and playing. Each lesson block broadens the ‘playing field’ for me in ways that challenge me and move me forward. Paul’s integrated and personal approach makes me feel like I am ‘taking lessons’ with a patient and engaging and inspiring teacher.

Paul Davids is a phenomenal teacher! This course has changed my whole understanding of guitar and the fretboard. Before taking this course, I hit a plateau. I was only learning licks/songs/progressions without ever understanding the music. It’s like I was listening to a song in a foreign language. This course is exactly what I needed and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to truly understand their instrument and enjoy the learning process. It does require dedication and work, so if that turns you off, look elsewhere.

Josh C.

This course was EXACTLY what I needed to break out of the rut of just learning songs. I’ve gained a solid foundation that inspires a lifetime of guitar-loving playing. There were MANY “ah-ha” moments that clicked into my head how it all fits together. I have a new confidence now. Thanks Paul!!!!!

Meet Your Instructor

Hi, my name is Paul.

I first picked up the guitar when I was 12 years old. I was a kid with a red Squier and a dream of playing like Green Day, Metallica, and a local band called ‘de Heideroosjes.’

I quickly fell in love with the guitar and went on to study music with a minor in teaching at Rotterdam Conservatory.

I then split my time between playing live shows and coaching students privately – and over 10 years, worked with hundreds of students and a lot of beginners.

It was around this time that I launched my YouTube channel, and started connecting with thousands of guitarists all over the world.

I began to realize that the learning experience for so many intermediates was the same.

They would start out full of enthusiasm and excitement to achieve their guitar playing dreams.

They’d learn chords, scales, songs and licks – and perhaps even some fundamental theory.

After a while though, progress would start to slow down.

Playing the same handful of songs and chords was no longer enough for them to keep making progress.

And learning more scales and theory started to feel like a waste of time, as they struggled to actually use this knowledge to improvise confidently or create music.

So they got stuck in a loop of aimlessly playing licks and snippets of songs, or endlessly drilling scales and exercises.

They never gained the knowledge or confidence to navigate across the fretboard, improvise freely or jam with other guitarists or musicians.

Many would get stuck here for years or even decades.

I created Next Level Playing to help these guitarists break out of the “intermediate loop”, start making progress and begin enjoying their guitar playing again.

There are few things as rewarding as being able to express yourself through your music, and being able to confidently connect on a deeper level with other musicians.

And if you’re ready to go on that journey, I’d love to be your guide along the way.

Cheers,

Paul
