Paul Davids is one of the world’s most-loved online guitar content creators. His YouTube channel has nearly 4 million subscribers and over half a billion views, and his five courses have helped over 100,000 students get better at the guitar. Paul is now working on something new, and we are looking for a few brilliant new members to join our team.
The role:
We are seeking a writer to join Paul’s team and support Paul in creating his written content, such as course materials, blog posts, emails, supplementary PDFs, promotional and advertising copy, and more.
You should be a knowledgeable guitarist. We’re looking for someone who genuinely plays guitar, who can understand what it feels like to be stuck on a technique, to finally nail a chord transition, or to realise that everything you’ve been practising has quietly started to click. That lived experience is what will elevate your copy above what any copywriter could produce, and make it speak to Paul’s audience.
You don’t have to have tonnes of copywriting experience to apply, the main thing is that you’re a good writer and a solid guitarist. If you’re looking for growth, we can coach you on the copy front. But you should already be a competent writer, used to producing several versions, revising your own work, and collaborating to improve your copy.
The kind of things you’ll be working on:
- Blog posts for Paul’s website
- Ad copy for paid social campaigns
- New course content
- Course landing pages and product descriptions
- Updating and improving existing written course material
- Writing sales emails
- Writing video scripts / ad scripts
- Researching Paul’s audience
- Talking to customers to learn more about their goals and struggles
- Crafting and conducting customer research/surveys
- Creating free written guitar resources
- YouTube descriptions and supporting content
- Proofreading and editing copy produced by other team members
- Writing and refining sales pages for course launches
- Email sequences – prelaunch, launch, and post-launch
About you:
- A guitarist, first and foremost — you play. You’ve taken lessons, watched tutorials, struggled through the early stages, and come out the other side. You know the vocabulary, the frustrations, and the breakthroughs. You don’t need this explained to you, but you are competent at explaining it to others. Perhaps you even have some teaching or coaching experience, although this isn’t strictly necessary to apply.
- A professional writer — you understand the difference between writing that sounds nice and writing that does a job. You’re comfortable turning a critical eye on your own work and learning from others how to improve. You’re always open to feedback and learning.
- Familiar with the online course or creator space — you understand how audiences relate to creators they trust, and you know how to write in a way that honours that relationship rather than exploiting it. Paul’s audience is loyal and perceptive. Hard sells don’t work here.
- A strong editor of your own work — you don’t share the first messy draft, at least not until you’ve reworked it at least once on your own. You’re self-critical in a productive way and you know when something isn’t landing yet.
- Easy to work with — you take a brief seriously, ask good questions upfront, and deliver on time. You’re open to feedback without being precious about your work..
- Calm under pressure — there will be busy times, and times when copy needs to be reworked with a fast turnaround to keep things on track. You understand that “slow is smooth and smooth is fast” and know how to balance your workload, and not take on more than you can handle. We’ll have multiple writers on the team to make sure you don’t have to.
- An effective communicator — someone who communicates clearly and professionally in writing, whether that’s in your copy or in a note to a team member. We use Basecamp to manage all our projects, so 90% of our communication is written. A lack of clarity when working in a team across multiple timezones can put huge delays on the project and affect momentum.
To apply:
Write a short note to writer@pauldavidsguitar.com detailing your experience and why you think you’d be a good fit.
In your note, please include a short paragraph about the most challenging thing you’ve encountered whilst learning guitar, and how you overcame it.
Please do not attach a CV to the email. If you would like to link to/attach a sample piece of your writing, feel free to do so.
There is no deadline to apply, but we need this person to start as soon as possible, so the sooner you apply, the better. Once we’ve filled the position, we will remove this advert.
We’ll aim to reply to all applicants within two weeks of their application.
We’re excited to hear from you!
