The Novice vs The Pro

I remember when things on the electric guitar really started to “click” for me.

At the time, I was already pretty comfortable with basics like chords and scales, I could play in a variety of different styles, and with practice I was able to nail some more challenging solos.

But even though I was having lots of fun, I still wasn’t able to play as fluently or as expressively as I wanted.

There was something missing in my playing, and I heard it every time I listened to more experienced guitarists.

I knew a lot of scales and theory, but I couldn’t recreate the magic I heard in some of my favorite songs:

The amazing licks that Mark Knopfler throws in between chords in “Sultans Of Swing”, the way that David Gilmour holds our attention with a 3 minute solo at the beginning of  “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”, and the beautiful blending of lead and rhythm techniques in John Mayer’s “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room.”

At first, I couldn’t figure out how to bring the same ideas to life in my playing.

But after years of patient practice and study, I learned that there are a number of key differences between good guitarists and those that are truly great:

Becoming an advanced guitarist isn’t about getting faster, learning more theory or trying to play the most difficult licks possible.

And in fact, intermediates often waste years of practice focusing on these areas. Their technical skills and understanding both increase, but their improvisations and solos sound exactly the same.

It took me years of trial and error (and a lot of practice!) to identify the exact differences between intermediate and advanced players, and to learn how to start playing like a pro, rather than a novice.

And after teaching students privately for over 10 years, and connecting with thousands of guitarists from all over the world through my YouTube channel, I realized that a lot of guitarists struggle to make this same move beyond the intermediate stage.

So I decided to create a course to help intermediate guitar players become advanced by teaching them the techniques and concepts used by their favorite guitarists.

Introducing:
Electric Elevation

Become an advanced guitar player that can play by feel, improvise with confidence and play expressively in the style of the pros. Here’s just some of what you’ll learn:

  • Gain confidence and a sense of freedom when improvising
  • Learn what triads are and how you can use them to create beautiful chord progressions
  • Move beyond just the minor pentatonic scale to create more varied and interesting solos
  • Stop feeling “trapped” on the fretboard and move around freely
  • Understand the modes, and how you can use them to create totally different feels in your playing
  • Learn to embellish chord progressions in the style of guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer and John Frusciante

All of these techniques and concepts will be taught through beautiful pieces and solos. So not only will you expand your repertoire, you’ll learn how to take these ideas and actually use them in a real musical context.

What you’ll find Inside Electric Elevation

Each module inside Electric Elevation is centred around one single key and progression. This gives us a framework for diving deep into each progression and looking at four key areas:

Module 1: E Major
  • Learn how to combine chords and single note lines to make simple, four chord progressions sound amazing
  • Play the changes – and understand the different frameworks that guitarists like David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Mark Knopfler and Stevie Ray Vaughan use in their solos
  • Start to view the fretboard “horizontally” and craft beautiful solos across single strings
  • Learn how to play the “thumb over the neck” technique and embellish your chords like Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer and John Frusciante
Module 2: E Minor
  • Understand how you can use fingerpicking to create unique licks in the style of Jeff Beck, Albert King and Mark Knopfler
  • Learn ways of playing and altering arpeggios across a chord progression, adding an interesting musical layer to your compositions
  • Understand how to use 6ths, inversions and single notes to embellish triads and create beautiful and dynamic chord progressions
  • Learn a framework for crafting solos that moves from a melodic and thematic approach, to one that is rooted in classic rock and blues
Module 3: A Minor
  • Appreciate how to use diminished chords, 7th chords and chord substitutions to create interesting and varied chord progressions
  • Learn ways of targeting specific intervals in your solos to create the sound of “new” chords in the rhythm section and add a little spice to your playing
  • Understand how to use the harmonic minor scale when playing in a minor blues to highlight the changes and create impact in the turnaround section
  • Learn to create a single guitar 12-bar blues that beautifully combines rhythm and lead ideas
Module 4: E Major Blues
  • Learn how to play a fingerstyle blues across 5 levels of difficulty – starting simple and building to a complex progression using embellishments and licks between chords
  • Understand blues guitar theory, and how you can add bluesy magic to your solos with the minor pentatonic scale, bending and the blues note
  • Learn to add depth and interest to a classic blues progression by using chords like an E7#9
  • Master the B.B. King Box, and how you can target it in your solos to seamlessly blend major and minor sounds
Module 5: G Major
  • Learn ways of connecting scale shapes diagonally across the fretboard, so you can navigate across the guitar freely when improvising
  • Understand how to use voice leading and the CAGED system to create chord progressions that have a beautiful sense of flow and movement
  • Learn a chord progression played in the style of Jimi Hendrix – mixing scales and chords, using embellishments and playing with the thumb over the top of the neck
  • Understand what spread triads are and why they are important, and learn an amazing exercise that will help you to play them all over the fretboard

What Students Are Saying

For a long time I had been stuck in a rut with my music, playing the same licks and ideas over and over again. It was predictable and uninspiring to me and worst of all to my audience. Paul Davids’ course Electric Elevation is just what I needed to give my playing a much needed boost. Like the name says it really did elevate my guitar playing to a new and enhanced level. The course offers refreshing, useful ideas and techniques that are paired with great tablature and instructional videos that make learning interesting and inspiring. All musicians, especially guitar players, want to try new things and keep moving forward and Electric Elevation will help you do just that.

It’s really the perfect course to take your playing to places you’ve always wanted it to go. There’s enough content here to last an intermediate guitar player a very long time, and to take you through to being quite advanced. There are deep dives into techniques here that fixed things I’ve been doing wrong for years. Paul builds on the music theory foundation he’s laid in his other courses to teach really practical ways of applying theory. I’ve done a fair bit of guitar courses around the internet and this one is very unique. It combines an extremely solid course structure with masterfully done videos and really fun, beautiful pieces to learn. I really think this is the course a lot of intermediate guitarists are looking for.

I now have 3 of Paul’s courses and began Electric Elevation with some nervousness as I was not sure if I pitched myself as an “intermediate guitarist.” You just have to enter this course to know that it will unlock so much of the instrument – sounds I only heard from professionals and making techniques available to me which I could not copy in any other way. Improvisation is also now a new thing as the course provides an arsenal and breadth of experience and fun. My confidence is growing – thank you Paul, keep making even a novice guitarist sound rewarding through fun learning.

Meet Your Instructor

Hi, my name is Paul.

I first picked up the guitar when I was 12 years old. I was a kid with a red Squier and a dream of playing like Green Day, Metallica, and a local band called ‘de Heideroosjes.’

I quickly fell in love with the guitar and went on to study music with a minor in teaching at Rotterdam Conservatory.

I then split my time between playing live shows and coaching students privately – and over 10 years, worked with hundreds of students and a lot of beginners.

It was around this time that I launched my YouTube channel, and started connecting with thousands of guitarists all over the world.

For many years I felt like there was something missing in my playing. I knew a lot of scales and theory, and could even play some challenging solos, but I couldn’t recreate the magic I heard in some of my favorite songs.

However, eventually I discovered the missing pieces that transformed my playing.

From that time on, things started to come together in a way that made me see my guitar in a whole new light.

For example, I didn’t think of the minor pentatonic as just another scale – it became a springboard for unlimited creativity.

I began to understand how things like tone, intonation, vibrato, phrasing, and articulation are just as important as playing the right notes.

And I finally saw how keys, chords, and scales relate to each other and could be brought together to add a new dimension to my playing.

I began to feel at home on the guitar, and my playing became so much more natural.

I experienced a level of freedom and expression in my playing that I never knew was possible, and it only deepened my love and appreciation of the guitar.

If you are an intermediate guitarist looking to experience that same freedom and joy, I’d love to guide you through the process.

Cheers,

Paul
